This dramatic work unfolds in a rich harmonic texture, developing rhythmic and melodic motives derived from the opening theme. Central to the piece is a lyrical section where the expressive melodic writing is supported by a gentle texture of undulating eighth-notes. From here the work gradually builds to a powerful climax and concludes with a final variation of the opening theme. Ballade, Op. 17, first published by CPP/Belwin in 1985, was commissioned by Eric Reiss who gave the premiere performance in Miami, Florida, also in 1985. The work was later recorded by pianist Tina Faigen on the ACA Digital compact disc "Visions of Dunbar."

Completed and first published in 1993, Five Impromptus, Opus 23, were conceived primarily as recital repertoire for moderately advanced student pianists. The pieces vary in degree of difficulty with the first two falling comfortably within the intermediate category, while the remainder of the set requires more advanced skills. Each piece, in general, emerges in a three-part (ABA) form. The writing is contemporary in flavor, including touches of polytonality and some use of mixed meters, but always traditionally pianistic. The three more difficult works, Impromptus Nos. 3-5, are included on the ACA Digital compact disc "Visions of Dunbar" recorded by pianist Tina Faigen. As displayed on this recording, these three works are sufficiently challenging to qualify as repertoire for early-advanced through artist-level performers, and certainly afford the advancing student the opportunity to explore and develop a greater sense of color, atmosphere and expression.

Catalog Number: SMP512
Price: $14.00
Contents: 8 Piano Solos / 32 pages
Level: Advanced / Professional*
Duration: 17 minutes
This dramatic, colorful set of 8 piano solos was written for pianist, Tina Faigen, who recorded them on the ACA Digital compact disc, "Visions of Dunbar." As the title suggests, the works invoke the influence of harmonic and melodic styles from the great piano music created earlier in the 20th century, particularly reminiscent of the Impressionistic period. The works, however, are strikingly original, resounding with the color and expressive qualities that are always associated with Robert Schultz's concert works. Faigen's flawless recording is a superb reference for the composer's intentions, and this edition, edited by Faigen, is a remarkable document to both the recording and Schultz's original score. Wonderfully received by audiences, 8 Reminiscences provides a welcome addition to the performance repertoire of concert pianists.
*While the Reminiscences are written for professional pianists, several of the works are accessible and appropriate repertoire for study by late-intermediate student pianists.

Completed in 1992, this Robert Schultz masterpiece for solo piano is dedicated to pianist, Tina Faigen, and is the title work for her compact disc recording, Visions of Dunbar. Recorded on the label ACA Digital, the CD is available worldwide, as well as on this site. The music score, having been previously available only in manuscript, has now been released in an exquisite Finale engraving, complete with Faigen's editing to match the recorded performance. Inspired by a Pennsylvania trout stream where Schultz and his family spent many hours fishing during his childhood, Schultz applies his contemporary impressionistic touch to much of the writing. As Schultz describes the Dunbar stream,
"The water is crystal clear and cold. The pines, mountain laurel and ferns that overflow the banks are wonderfully green and lush. The sounds of the stream and the woods are quite amazing--so peaceful and tranquil that one can get lost in it, just watching and listening. The water in the springtime is fast in most places, swollen by the melting snow. From May to September the water slows and becomes quieter, but is no less beautiful."
While the piece unfolds in a single movement, it is made up of distinct, contrasting sections that flow directly from one into the next. Portraying the different sections of the stream with weaving, colorful figurations, Schultz applies a rich harmonic palette and gorgeous lyricism, engaging in tone-painting in some of the episodes to evoke the motion of the water. Some are more meditative, reflecting the stillness of the environment. Schultz writes,
"This is the way the stream moves--nothing returns, it just continues. You pause to fish in each section, drinking in the scene and sounds that are within your immediate fishing boundaries. You become immersed in the theme, rhythm, tempo and harmony of the section until the fly has drifted over every square foot of water that might hold a trout, or until the fish has been landed or lost. Very quietly, you move a little way up or downstream and begin again."
