This brilliant concert solo was premiered by pianist
Tina Faigen, to whom the work is dedicated, on March 14, 2010 at a concert of
Robert Schultz works in Pittsburgh. Phantom
Rag, which closed the program, was an instant success and appears destined
to become a universal favorite.
Phantom Rag
is written in one of the standard forms of the traditional rag: AABBACCA. It is
solidly grounded in D-minor and follows a standard sectional key relationship.
The piece includes some modern twists and harmonic touches, but always in
combination with the zest and playfulness of the ragtime tradition. Through the
use of minor keys, coupled with edgy jazz harmonies and a rapid-fire tempo, Phantom Rag achieves a striking originality and contemporary flavor,
yet retains a clear respect for one of America’s most popular piano styles.
